Tentacle Oscillator


This is was a commission from Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips. It has been used on several occasions for the closing act of the song “Sleeping on the Roof”, being used during their live performance for the closing sequence of the last song from the album “The Soft Bulletin” and works as a great stage prop that has a lot of character to it. The tentacles, which were built upon request by Wayne, were built with a tone and volume control. Each tentacle produces its own sound, all of which are initally tuned to the same frequency, so the noise produced helps create the foundation for a ‘wall of sound’ with the 6 notes being played simoultaneously. It was intended as an interactive noise instrument, and is actively in this fashion. Here’s an example for one of its intended purposes. I used the weather oscillator for this. Title: An oscillator as a gift from the heavens in a beam of light.

This was the original version that I had made. I learned about this schematic from Nicolas Collin’s book ‘Handmade Electronic Music’, and built this as an experiment. I needed a vessel to store it in, and settled on a glass mason jar from the kitchen, and mounted it under the lid.The glass jar contained a small rodent skull, a crystal, and a bloody green alien barbie head, all for good luck, and the schematic was drawn on the front.

This was given as a gift to Wayne after he expressed interest in the piece. The video is an example of it being controlled by light that is dictated by a drum machine, and the ambient light from the room. It was housed inside of a transparent case, so the circuit had an omnidirectional input. The newer version is very bidirectional, so the pitch for the individual inputs are much easier to control.
